About the Court

The Superior Court of Justice is the largest superior trial court in Canada. The Court has jurisdiction over criminal, civil, and family cases.

The Superior Court presides in 51 locations in Ontario, from Kenora in the Northwest to Cornwall in the East and from Cochrane in the Northeast to Windsor in the Southwest, an area well over 1 million square kilometres in size.

The Chief Justice of the Superior Court of Justice is responsible for scheduling and assigning judges duties. The Associate Chief Justice, eight Regional Senior Judges and a Senior Judge of the Family Court together form the Council of Regional Senior Judges who provide assistance and advice to the Chief Justice.

The Court serves 8 judicial regions in Ontario. Each region is headed by a Regional Senior Judge who exercises the powers and performs the duties of the Chief Justice. A complement of 242 federally-appointed full-time judges serve the 12.7 million people of Ontario.

More information regarding the jurisdiction, structure and organization of the Superior Court of Justice can be found in the annual report.
